The fresh market

The Fresh Market was established by Ray and Beverly Berry on March 5, 1982, in Greensboro, North Carolina. They inaugurated their first store in the former Bi-Rite establishment, located at the intersection of Lawndale Drive and Pisgah Church Road. The Berrys envisioned creating a superior grocery store that would rekindle the ambiance of open European-style markets. In October 2012, they ventured into the Western market by opening a store in Roseville, California. However, come March 2014, the company announced the closure of all three of its Sacramento area stores, including the Roseville branch.

In 2012, Fresh Market embarked on an acquisition and remodeling endeavor, taking over four locations previously owned by the longstanding family-owned Houston grocer, Rice Epicurean Markets. These acquired locations were subsequently closed in May 2016 when Fresh Market decided to shut down its operations across 13 stores in Texas, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas.

To fund its initial public offering, Fresh Market initially set a price range of $18–$20 per share, which was later increased to $22. This strategic move allowed Fresh Market to raise a total of $290 million, paving the way for the company to commence trading on Nasdaq under the symbol TFM on November 5, 2010.

On April 27, 2016, Apollo Global Management, LLC (APO) acquired the stock of The Fresh Market, Inc. (TFM), leading to its transformation into a privately held company. Consequently, its stock was delisted from NASDAQ.

In May 2022, the Chilean retail company Cencosud acquired a 67% stake in Fresh Market, marking a significant development in the company’s ownership structure.
